We are very excited that spring is upon us! We have certainly been enjoying the beautiful weather and the opportunity to be outside during recess! This week, we continue to welcome new kindergarten families to the Green Meadow Community. The excitement is evident as each parent gathers information about curriculum and classroom routines through visits and conversations. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable parent volunteers are leading the tours, welcoming new families and answering all questions. We would like to thank the parents who took time from their busy schedules to guide the incoming kindergarten families on their tours.
Professional development for the school wide Writers’ Workshop Initiative has been an important part of our schedule this week. Teachers in Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 teachers have been engaged in workshops and classroom observations to continue learning about the units of study and student conferencing. A presenter from the Reading and Writing Project from Columbia University provided value insight and information to teachers as they continue to develop their implementation plan and explore instructional strategies.
Along with the arrival of spring comes the Administration of the MCAS Reading Assessment. On Wednesday, March 21st and Thursday, March 22nd grade 3 students will participate in this assessment. This evening, Thursday, March 15, there will be a special presentation for parents explaining this important assessment and the administration process. Even if your child is not currently in third grade, we hope you will join us to gather information and develop an understanding of this state mandated annual assessment.
We are delighted by the response to our Books and Bingo program scheduled for Wednesday, March 28. Students will have an opportunity to add to their collection of books as they play bingo with their families. There is still time to register! We welcome all families to participate in this special evening.

Mrs. Lawton’s First Grade Class:
Dear Green Meadow families,
This month we enjoyed Read across America and our special visit from The Maynard Fire Chief. We learned about fire safety as well as had the opportunity to stop, drop and roll across our classroom! Along with celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we read several of his books and did some fun activities to go along with them. Last week the first graders were able to share our ‘Cloud’ song with the entire school at our all school assembly. We learned the various names and types of clouds and made pictures to wear at the assembly for the school to see. We are excited to move into spring and enjoy the nice weather that we are having! Take Care! Mrs. Lawton
Mrs. Duddy’s Grade 3 Class:
Mrs. Duddy’s Third grade has been preparing for the Reading Language Arts MCAS test that will take place next week. In preparation for the test, students have been practicing test taking strategies. We have been using actual former MCAS tests in order to help familiarize students with the format of the test. Students have been writing open response questions and we have been able to use the Smartboard to display student samples that have been graded and released by the state. It is a great opportunity for students to see examples of scored responses. Students are all in agreement that I score their responses “harder than” the state!
