Today the entire school attended the dress rehearsal of the second grade musical program “Hats.”  Our second grade students performed with such poise, enthusiasm, and energy!   Families will have the opportunity to view this wonderful program tomorrow morning at 9:00.  Upon arrival, please wait outside until we have brought the students in for the day.   After 8:45, please sign in on the tables in the hallway and enter the cafeteria to await the performance. We loved seeing this special presentation and know you will too!

As you can imagine, dismissal is a very busy time for us.  We are focused on safety and to that end are very careful about making certain each student’s dismissal plan is followed. To help us in this process and ensure safe dismissal for all, please put all changes in dismissal in writing and send the notes addressed to your child’s teacher to school with students in the morning.  Phone calls and emails during the day often cause confusion and make it difficult for us to be certain all students are properly and safely dismissed.  It is also important to discuss changes in dismissal with your child as knowing their dismissal plan reassures students and helps them arrive safely at their destination.  Thank you for your assistance in this process.

Last week you received a letter offering you the opportunity to share information about your child’s placement for the 2016-2017 school year.  Classroom teachers, special educators, as well as other staff members who support your child, work closely to develop class grouping that enable children to learn effectively and socialize well.  The staff knows each student well and strives for the best possible placement for all.  You are welcome to share information to be considered in this process that may be helpful to support your child.  All placement letters must be received in the office by Thursday, April 7.  Today you will receive a revised copy of this letter which further explains the process and clarifies the date letters must be received.  We will focus all of our efforts on creating positive and productive classes that support student learning.

Saludos de la Clase de Inmersión del Segundo Grado!¡

Greetings from the Second Grade Spanish Immersion Class!

Our class has been very busy.  We’ve been working on informational writing, including “how to” stories which demonstrate our expertise in performing an activity.  In mathematics the students wrapped up learning how to tell time, count money and are currently working on measurement.  As scientists, they are excited to revisit the Vernal Pool to make additional observations and record information on the changes that are taking place.   In addition, the second grade will be learning about erosion.  Students will discover how erosion affects our topsoil and its impact on our food supply.  Moreover, the students have worked on creating timelines to have a better appreciation of history, sequential order of events and understand how a series of events can shape a person’s life or community.  Lastly, our class travelled “across the pond” to London and learned about British culture and history through images and stories shared by a guest speaker. As you can see, our class has been very busy learning.  We hope you have a safe and fun Spring .   ¡Adios!

 News from Mrs. Lawton’s Class:

Dear Families,

This month has definitely gone by very fast.  We are very excited that spring is here and hopefully the warm weather too.  We are continuing to record and monitor our amaryllis plant.  We have not seen a flower as of yet and it is standing 23 inches tall.  We are beginning to see more signs of spring and are hopeful that our bulbs that were planted in the fall will come up soon.  We are continuing to work on our reading and writing strategies.  We are also working on our author study of Kevin Henkes and have really enjoyed reading his books.  We are thinking and writing like authors during Writers Workshop.  We can't wait to show you some of our special projects that will be on display for our Open House in April.

Have a great Spring!  Mrs. Lawton
