                                                                Debbie Bresnick, Assistant Principal

Although school has begun, summer is staying with us! Despite the warm temperatures, our school year is off to a wonderful start. The excitement began during the Meet and Greet when students anxiously came to visit their classrooms, meet their teachers, and reconnect with friends.  The excitement continued during the first day of school when classroom communities developed as the basis for a positive and productive school year.  Another special aspect of the beginning of school is the arrival of our new kindergarten students to begin their Green Meadow experience.

An additional highlight of the beginning of each school year is meeting with parents and sharing information about curriculum and classroom routines during our Back to School Curriculum Night. This year the Green Meadow Back to School/Curriculum Night will be held on Thursday, September 17 from 6:30-8:00 PM. At 6:30 we invite parents to join us in the cafeteria for a brief presentation focused on curriculum initiatives and the school experience. Following the initial presentation, parents are encouraged to visit their child’s classroom where teachers will share an overview of the core curriculum, classroom instruction, procedures, and expectations. They will also share information about curriculum initiatives such as the Daily Five, Just Right Books, Writer’s Workshop, and Go Math as well as our focus in Science and Nature.  During this time, teachers will also explore different ways parents can support each child in order to maximize his/her educational experience and creat an effective home school partnership.

The specific schedule for this evening will be as follows:

·         6:30-6:50        Welcome in the cafeteria for all parents

  • 7:00-7:30         Classroom Parent Presentation for Grades 2 and 3

                                      Specialist visits

Book Fair for Parents of Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade 1

·         7:30- 8:00       Classroom Presentations (Preschool, Kindergarten, Grade 1)

                                     Specialist Visits

Book Fair for Parents of Grades 2 and 3 in the Library

During the evening we encourage parents to visit the special educators, literacy and math coaches, and the specialists to develop a comprehensive understanding of the Green Meadow Art, Music, Physical Education, and Library Curriculum.  Also please visit the fall book fair which will also be held the evening.

The focus of this evening is on classroom instruction and curriculum initiatives.  In order to maintain student confidentiality, teachers will not be able to discuss individual students at this time.  Regular opportunities to meet with classroom teachers to discuss individual student progress occurs during the fall Parent Conferences. Please remember that communication is not limited to scheduled conference times. We truly value open communication with families and encourage ongoing dialogue.  Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at any time through a message in the office, a note in your child’s backpack, or by sending an email to schedule a time for discussion.

We hope you will find this evening to be an informative and enjoyable experience. We welcome you to a new school year and look forward to seeing you on September 17.

News from Mrs. Krasinski’s Class:

Mrs. Krasinski’s class is so excited to start their adventure in Kindergarten at Green Meadow.  We are getting to know one another and becoming acclimated with the school.  We are looking forward to learning our letters and sounds in the upcoming weeks. In math, we just completed our first unit on numbers! We are becoming quite the authors and illustrators in writing workshop! It has been a great start to the new school year!

Library News from Mrs. Patino: Returning students are settling in to library routines and have been checking out books. Kindergarten students are being introduced to our wonderful library and will be allowed to check out one book at a time. Library books will stay in their classrooms for now- about half way through the year they will be able to bring them home to share with you.

The book fair is coming! The fall book fair will be open 6:00-8:00 pm during Curriculum Night, next Thursday, September 17th. This is a perfect time to get some early Christmas shopping done! All proceeds go to the library to purchase more books for our collection. Thank you for your support!

Special Notes:

·         Back to School Curriculum Night is an important opportunity for teachers to share information with parents.  Therefore this is a parent only evening.  A family Open House is held in the spring.

·         The Green Meadow PTO is hosting the annual Back to School Picnic this Friday, September 116:00-7:30 p.m. at the Green Meadow Playground. This is always a fun evening of getting all the GM families together as the school year begins. Families are asked to bring their picnic dinner and a picnic blanket or chairs. Rain date is September 18.

·         Morning Supervision begins each day at 8:15.  Please do not drop students off before this time.  The Excel program offers an early arrival if you need to bring your child to school early.

·         During the next few weeks we will begin practicing some of our important safety procedures.  In a positive and reassuring way, students will learn the procedures for fire drills and school lockdowns. You may want to continue the conversations with your child at home.
