Art Matters was the theme of this year’s Grade 2 Art Show. Art space was filled with an amazing display of the unique art projects created by our second grade students. It is so wonderful to see the curriculum connections as children combined their art with writing. Special thanks to Mrs. Santillo and the second graders for sharing their beautiful art work in this special show. Beautiful artwork was also abundant at the preschool Art Show. Thank you to the preschool teachers and students for sharing art projects. We certainly have talented students at Green Meadow School!
This week also was filed with beautiful music and wonderful dance as the first grade students treated us to a special outdoor concert in the courtyard on a beautiful May morning. The concert began as children danced around the May Pole with brightly colored ribbons. They also shared an enjoyable selection of songs and dances that showcased their talents and learning throughout the year. Special thanks to Ms. Lilley and the first grade students for a wonderful performance. We look forward to the second grade concert on Friday, May 17th and the third grade concert on June 4th.
The coming week is also a busy time at Green Meadow School. The third grade MCAS will be administered on Monday, May 13th and Tuesday May 14th. Kindergarten screening will be held on Friday, May 17th and Friday, May 24h. It is evident that this first visit to school is filled with the excitement and anticipation for our new students. We always look forward to this special opportunity to spend time with our incoming kindergarteners and their families.
Our last parent coffee of the school year will be held on Friday, May 31st at 8:45. We hope you will join us for coffee and an informal conversation about any topic of interest as we transition to summer and prepare for a new school year.
News From Mrs. Forseter’s Kindergaren Class:
Spring has sprung in Mrs. Forseter’s classroom! After April vacation, we began an integrated “Seed to Plant” unit. We began by examining some beans that we soaked overnight to find out what is inside them that will turn into a plant. Then, each child planted to two kidney beans in a pot of dirt and every morning since, the children race over to their pots to see what’s growing. We also set up some experiments to see if beans will go in three pots. Each pot is missing one element we thought it would need to grow strong and healthy: dirt, sun, and water. The class made predictions about whether these beans will grow or not and already, we are shocked to see that the plant placed in the dark is growing! Last week, each table of children planted several sunflower seeds, so perhaps we will have some lovely flowers in bloom before long. We made bean graphs with our math groups and searched a bowl of beans to find all fifteen different varieties. In writing, we have been recalling the experiments and experiences from our planting unit while continuing to use our sequence words: first, then, next, and finally. We have read many fiction and nonfiction stories about plants such as The Tiny Seed, The Carrot Seed, The Giant Carrot, Kate and the Beanstalk, Seed to Sunflower, and Sunflower House. Finally, each child made a beautiful flower collage from paper rings and painted green stems that are hanging inside and outside our classroom. Stop by for a colorful burst of spring!
