The end of the school year is always filled with culminating activities and events that showcase and celebrate all the learning that has occurred throughout the year. This week we completed the administration of the third grade MCAS. The students placed all their efforts into demonstrating the mathematical knowledge and understanding that they have gained throughout their Green Meadow experience. Student results will be available for families in the fall.
Publishing Parties and Authors’ Teas are occurring in many classrooms as students celebrate their skills as authors by sharing their original stories with peers and families. Classes are enjoying the beautiful weather by taking walking fieldtrips to places such as the bank. Preschool students are excited about their upcoming visit to Drumlin Farm while the grade one students will enjoy a special enrichment program about animal habitats. Third grade students are anxiously anticipating their concert on June 4 and the Ice Cream and DVD celebration on Thursday, June 20.
We would like to say a very special thank you to the many volunteers who support our school. We can always rely on the PTO to provide classroom support and special community events. They sponsored the Picturing Writing Program which combines the beauty and creativity of collage with the craft of writing by supplying the extensive materials needed to make this such a successful curriculum initiative. The PTO enrichment committee selects and schedules the many programs that come into the school to support our curriculum. We would also like to thank all the families and the PTO for a very special luncheon they provided for Teacher Appreciation last week.
Our school council consists of dedicated staff and parents who worked diligently on a new handbook which will be distributed at the beginning of the coming school year. They also developed a comprehensive school improvement plan which outlines our vision and goals for the future. In addition, the Greater Boston Jewish Coalition connects us with volunteers who come to school on a regular basis to read with students and support early literacy development.
We are so fortunate to be part of a such a supportive community who are committed to being effective partners in the education of our students.
News From Mrs. Duddy’s Third Grade Class:
Students are excited about creating free form poems using an art –and-literature based approach to writing called Picturing Writing which was developed at the University of New Hampshire. Students create collages using various hand-painted textured papers and a variety of art techniques. Image-making within the writing process helps students gain confidence and provides visual and kinesthetic tools for thinking and writing allowing the writer to be successful. The students’ poems are truly amazing.
