Next week is a special week for our second grade students.  They will be showcasing their amazing musical and artistic talents in special presentations.  On Monday, May 18 from 5:30-8:00 PM, we hope you will be able to stop by Art Space for the grand opening of the Second Grade Art Show.   Throughout the year the students have been exploring different medium and techniques as they create unique artwork.   Art Space provides the perfect setting to display a range and variety of student work in an authentic gallery setting.  Please join us to celebrate the student accomplishments for our special opening or during the next two weeks while the display remains available.

On Thursday, May 21 at 9:00, our second grade students will be presenting a special musical production entitled “Arf!”  As you can imagine, our students will be in costumes to fit themes, sharing their talents through song, dance, and speaking.   They have been diligently preparing and are excited to perform for their families and friends.  We look forward to seeing you there. A few notes to help us with the busy transition times:

·         We will begin seating families in the cafeteria at 8:50 AM after the preschool students have arrived and are in class.   Until this time, we are asking families to wait outside to ensure the safe transition for our preschool students.

·         Parking may initially be a challenge while our preschool students are arriving.  Once families bring their children to school, more parking will be available.

On Wednesday, May 20, we will have our final parent coffee of the school year.  This ongoing series of parent coffees has provided us with an opportunity to have meaningful and informative discussions about important topics.  This final parent coffee will include an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the current year and to discuss the process of transitioning to next year.  We hope you will join us to share your ideas, experiences, questions, and suggestions as we prepare for the transition to summer and the arrival of a new school year.

This is the time of year when we reflect on the current school year and begin planning for the next.  An important part of the process is gathering information and feedback from families about each child’s school experience.  Each year is filled with learning activities, friendships, and special events that define each child’s school experience.  In order for us to continue to grow and develop as a school, we are asking for your thoughts and suggestions.  You should receive a parent survey today which we hope you will take a few moments to complete.  We value the information you share to help us in the important planning process. Please return completed surveys to the school office or to your child’s teacher.

We hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather!  We are all delighted to see the return of sunny days.

Recess Update

Spring has finally sprung at Green Meadow!  Flowers are blooming in the courtyard, the leaves on the trees are green, and students once again are enjoying our playground. However, along with the warmer weather inevitably come challenges in behavior management, especially at recess and lunch. After one particularly noisy and disruptive second and third grade lunch, the students and I met during their afternoon recesses to see how we could work together to fix the problem. One class of third graders though, feeling that this was particularly unfair, wrote carefully crafted letters to express their dissatisfaction, leading to an impromptu class meeting during their snack time.  We had an honest exchange of ideas, agreeing on some issues and disagreeing on others, and the students received the message that their thoughts and opinions are heard and valued. This is only one small example, though, of the way our third grade students have grown into thoughtful, school leaders. Our Green Meadow Community can be so proud that we have students who so articulately express their ideas and are willing to express their opinions in such a respectful way.

Mrs. Mooradian’s Class

Preschool started the week of May 11 with our Annual Art Show.  It was a huge success as the children were able to view their art portfolios with family members and friends. We continue out ‘Healthy Habits’ this week with activities related to healthy food.  A favorite activity this week will be making Stone Soup and guessing who will get the lucky stone!  The ‘Healthy Habit’ theme will lead into the human body and it’s systems the following week. Other anticipated events are scheduled for June – the singer/musician presentation and our End-of –Year Celebration.

Mrs. McPhail’s Class

Ahoy from Mrs. McPhail's 3rd grade class!  We have been enjoying this beautiful weather (finally!).  We took a Spring Nature Walk with our kindergarten buddies in Mrs. Krasinski's class and observed all the sights and sounds of the new season.  We are busy preparing for our upcoming Wax Museum, finishing the filming for our Tigercast News project, and taking the End-of-Year PARCC assessments in literacy and math.  Soon we will visit Fowler for "Up Day" in preparation for the transition to 4th grade next year.  We can't believe we are sailing into the final weeks of school!  Bon Voyage!
