Happy New Year!  We were delighted to welcome our students and families back to school as we begin 2016. Along with all the learning the occurs in each classroom, many exciting activities and initiatives are planned for the coming year.  Our collaboration with the Massachusetts Audubon Society continues during the early release day on January 15.   Grade level teams will be continuing the study of specific topics such as weather, trees, erosion, and plant life, focusing on developing learning activities that support student understanding of science content.   Our second grade students are continuing their study of the Vernal Pool with special programs this week led by naturalist Erica Whitworth.  Her presentations throughout the year excite and inspire the students as they expand their knowledge and enhance their understanding.  Our first grade students have begun their preparations for their family concert on Friday, February 5.  The students are very excited to share their musical talents with families and friends.   March brings our Annual Read Across America Celebration and Bingo for Books as we begin our celebration of literacy.   We look forward to the learning and exciting events to come.

Holly Class Happenings:

(Written with help from Holly class students)

We are happy to start the new year with Sensational Second Grade Attitudes.  We are KIND, we are SAFE, and we are SMART learners!

  • In science we have finished dissecting our owl pellets. We have learned a song about owl pellets too!
  • In math we are working on becoming fluent with our facts...we are RAP stars with our "Doubles RAP" song.  We have learned the count up and count back strategies, our doubles, and our doubles plus one strategies, and we are practicing with a lot of fun games!
  •  Before the break we celebrated Happy Holly-days with parent readers!  Thank you for sharing some of your family's favorite holiday stories. We were very surprised to get our own books to keep from "Jolly McJingle" our Kindness Elf"...Now that a new year has started, we are reading many books and "making connections" as we read and think about other stories, the real world, and ourselves!
  • We finished Small Moment stories and we started an Author study with our college student, Miss Wilson.  We will continue learning about and writing like real authors!

Happy 2016 from Elijah, Simon O,  Lydia, Sierra, Alex, Will, Cody, Caleb, Kat,  Kaleb,  Hannah, Maya, Allison, Idy, Maria, Katie, Molly, Kole, Max, Amanda, Simon A, and Mrs. Alford,  and Mrs. Holly!

News from Mrs. Adamson’s Class

Happy New Year! In reading, we continue with the Daily 5 (Read to Self, Listen to Reading, Work on Writing, Word Work). We are also reading a variety of informational texts. In writing, we are realizing, “when we are done, we have only just begun.” We go back and add to the picture or the text, acknowledging our writing has a purpose and an audience. In math, we continue to practice addition strategies (making 10, doubles, doubles plus 1 or doubles minus 1). We will be moving on to subtraction strategies in chapter 5. The courtyard is our laboratory. As scientists, we wonder what will happen to the bulbs we planted, the bird feeders we fill, as well as the 16 pound pumpkin that is rotting.
