It is always so special when Green Meadow graduates return to share their talents with us.  During the month of December we enjoyed musical performances from the Fowler band and carolers from the high school. Today we welcomed some high school students and their teacher Ms. Dowd who came to visit the students in Ms. Burns’s first grade class. The high school students shared their original digital stories and pizza with the first grade students who were delighted by their special guests.  We look forward to more collaboration in the future.

The Green Meadow School sign is important to us all.  Many first day of school pictures as well as other special photos center on this special sign. You may have noticed that our Green Meadow School sign has been damaged by the weather which saddens us all.  Through the support of the PTO, our sign will be replaced.  PTO members are in the process of making the arrangements for a replacement.  Look for a new sign sometime in the spring.  Thanks to the PTO for their ongoing support of our school.

We would also like to thank the many families who diligently collected and submitted box tops. As a result of your efforts, we raised $830.  These funds will be used by the PTO to support the many wonderful programs and activities they sponsor in our school.

This evening we will be hosting a special parent program, “Friends and Foes.”  Families often have questions about the changing friendships children experience as they grow.  We hope you are able to join us as we explore this important topic.  On Thursday, January 24th, we will have an additional parent forum.  During this evening we will discuss topics of interest and ideas as well as answer questions that families may have about our school and curriculum.  We truly value the thoughts and ideas families share. Please join us for these informative discussions.

It is so difficult to believe that we are already beginning the process of preparing for the next school year.  An important step in this process is kindergarten registration.  Kindergarten registration will be held on Tuesday, January 15th, Wednesday, January 16th and Thursday, January 17th from 9-12:00.  Evening registration will be held on Wednesday, January 16th from 5-7 PM.  Registration packets are available in the office if you would like to complete the forms in advance. Birth certificate, proof of residency, physical and immunization records are needed to complete the registration process. Please share this information with friends and neighbors who may have kindergarten age students.

News from Mrs. Forseter Kindergarten Class:

We finished 2012 by saying goodbye to Mrs. Ginnity and seeing pictures of her new baby boy!  2013 began with all of us getting reacquainted and adjusting to some changes that I made to the physical space over the vacation.  It was fun to rediscover familiar things and explore new ones.  In January during the Daily 5, we will focus on discussing “What makes a story great?” and reviewing all the strategies that good readers use to read unknown words.  We will be reading several Leo Lionni stories to guide our conversations.  So far, we have read Swimmy and A Color of My Own.  Using the Fundations curriculum, we will be learning about tapping out words to hear each sound and adding more trick words to our classroom word wall.  After selecting new just right books, we will work to increase our independent reading stamina.  Thank you to all the Green Meadow staff for making me feel so welcome during first few weeks at school, this is a wonderful place to be!

News From Miss Bausmith’s Second Grade Class

Second graders enjoyed a special visit this week from Gregory Wenzel. He is a local paleontologist who goes on real dinosaur digs! He is also an artist and has painted covers of children’s books about dinosaur and has created dinosaur toys. Students were able to see a variety of fossils as well as Gregory’s artwork. With Gregory’s guidance, students traced a picture of a T-rex skeleton to help to create their own picture of a dinosaur. It was really interesting and a ton of fun! Thanks so much to the Enrichment Committee for providing us with this wonderful and exciting opportunity!

Special Note:

  • It's that time of year again to begin planning for the class projects.  Each class will create a unique, painted project, which will be raffled off at the PTO Spring Auction.  We need parent volunteers to help in three areas: sanding, priming and base coating the projects ("Project Prep"); going into the classrooms to help the children personalize the projects ("Classroom Helpers"); and putting on the finishing touches to create a themed masterpiece ("Project Embellishment"). If you would like to help in any of these areas, please go to the website below to sign up: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/60B0E48A5A72BA57-classroom EXCEL Programs- After school Programs
  • Weather permitting, our students have some time to play outdoors as people arrive.  Please send students to school wearing their boots and snow pants so they are warm and able to enjoy this time.
  • Registration for after school programs at Green Meadow is open for the following programs; Art Adventures, Chess Wizards, French, Spanish, Engineering, Lego Engineering, Rhythm Kids-Drumming. Please call all Lois Cohen at 978-897-8021 for registration information.
  • The Police have asked us to remind families not to park or drop off in the fire lane at the front of the building.  The police will be issuing tickets to those parked in the fire lane.
  • The Green Meadow PTO Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 15th at 7 pm in the Office Conference Room.  This month's agenda will include Plans for Spring Auction/Social 2013!  Please come join us if you are interested in helping out with this year's auction event.  There are many different tasks and we need lots of help from the Green Meadow community to have it be a great success.  If you cannot make the meeting but would like to help out, please contact Michelle Grace at mlgracey@verizon.net.
  • Save the Date for Green Meadow Spring Auction and Social 2013

Please come join us on the evening of April 27th, 2013 at the Maynard Elks for our Annual Spring Auction and Social.  This event is a fun way to raise money for programs and supplies for our school and enjoy some time together as a Green Meadow community.  More details to follow but please put it in your calendars!
